More night life in the downtown area would really enhance Midland's appeal to a younger crowd! Not neccessarily the same old ”bar scene” just something NEW!!!

I agree, I think also if we had more live music on the weekends people would definitely go downtown. It would be kind of nice to have carriage rides for those with families or visiting and tour downtown.

I have to agree with the idea to enhance the night life downtown. The addition of a few permenant venues, not just bars, but places for all ages would be great. Once some places like this were opened, you could shut down a few blocks and have some sort of block party to get people familiarized with the new places. You are right though, it needs to be something “NEW” , kind of a change of pace, or it will be a hot-spot at first and the intrest will fade fast!

I agree but would like something more family oriented. Like free concerts on the weekends or street dances would be cool.

I hear there is going to be a new martiini bar where the old Pudgees is now. Really upscale even with a dress code. That will be refreshing!
I like the outdoor music events as well. Yesterday, with the reggae band Champagne with Friends (they are the ones playing when you're on the homepage) at the event, it would have been perfect for an outdoor concert. I guess we can't ever not be thankfull for rain out here though!

I agree with everyone here, especially on street dance events. Some dance clubs would be nice too, but I doubt that will ever happen. Some things that don't necessarily focus on just alcohal consumption are necessary. A state of the art Cyber Arcade would probably bring alot of teenager like folks as well, especially if they were to host LAN events and gaming tournaments.

I would love to see a brew house downtown. When I was in college that was one of our favorite places to go to try unique beers!

Second the brew pub idea. A place with beer brewed in house and great food would go over very well or at least I would enjoy. I've been talking to large chain brew pubs (BJ's, Rock Bottom, etc.) without much success. Looks like it would take a individual or some investors to open a brew pub here. Check out what the Yates brothers did in Artesia, NM. http://www.thewellhead.com

Wow, I linked from your story and that is amazing. I would love to see something like that downtown. I've hear about a group of downtown business owners that are wanting to back something like this, but don't want to manage it. If you have any ideas, lets keep talking!

I see no reason why some entrepreneur in Midland wouldn't be any less successful opening something like the Wellhead (Artesia NM) or Triple J's (Lubbock). New eatries go very well in Midland, especially one with some class and/or uniqueness to it. I think it's a goldmine waiting to happen…

Surely this town has a successful independent oilman out there anxious to invest his oil profits into something fun like a brewpub. It can be done with class and a family atmosphere.

I could not agree more. I love a good fresh beer.
The money men could get a homebrewer, like myself, to take care of operations….or the other two homebrewers who have alrady made posts before me.
Boerne has a good brewpub (The Dodging Duck), that has wonderful food and a great family atmosphere. Why can't we have one here?

I think a beer garden is a fantastic idea! An indoor/outdoor venue with music. What a great way to enjoy good weather. Some that may serve as good models are two in Houston, Hans Bier Haus, http://www.hansbierhaus.com/, where you can play bocce outside, the West Alabama Icehouse, or even Schultz’s Beer Garden in Austin. Maybe even the chains of Little Woodrow's or the Gingerman…..
Off the subject, but another fantastic thing to have downtown would be an independent bookstore, or any bookstore at all…. perhaps even a used bookstore….

I agree with these posts concerning that downtown needs classy nightlife like the wellhead or beir gardens. One of the problems I see with our downtown though is that there really isnt the old traditional cool buildings that these places seem to fit nicely into. If you look at the wellhead it is an old rock two story building probably built in the 1920s. That is cool place for a brewhouse to remake into a great venue. Because of oil booms, former midlanders have destoyed most of our old buildings to put in more modern larger office buildings (not a cool venue for a brewhouse). To emphasize this point I think Wall Street Bar and Grill, one of coolest venues in Midland, is a perfect example. It is in a small old building more than likely built in the 30s that survived the purges of the 1970s.
We do however have some that are still around. I think it is to our advantage that redevelopment is in its infancy because these buildings can be scooped up on the cheap. There is one I actually have my eye on.

What about a restaurant and microbrewery featuring beers of Texas?
