Buffalo Trail Council will host this unique event for the first time on October 7th to benefit the Scouting program in West Texas. This fundraiser will feature a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to rappel down the side of one of the tallest buildings in Midland. All participants will be treated like VIP’s while their supporters cheer them on during their thrilling descent!

How to participate: To secure a place, each participant needs to raise a minimum of $1,200 for the chance to go…OVER THE EDGE! Want to help the Scouts of West Texas but not to sure you want to go over. How about Tossing your Boss? You and your coworkers can raise $1,500 to “Toss your Boss.” He or she can respectfully decline ONLY if they or the company matches the money raised by the group. OR Raise $1,000 and join our Chicken Coop. Still get all the benefits of our EDGERS and be treated like a VIP the day of the event but with no harness required!

I hope this note finds you shining and steadfast.

Seen last week at the Midland Downtown Farmers’ Market: tomatoes, squash, onions, carrots, beets, greens, peppers, Bunny, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, brisket, jerky, dogs and treats, spices, bows, bracelets, candles, bath bombs, lotions, coffees, plants, cutting boards, salsas, jams, and still more. What will you see this Saturday? Maybe the same, maybe cantaloupe, maybe more? Definitely cantaloupes, but you won’t know for sure unlesss you show up. Ultimately that’s all that we ask of you, just Show Up.

I want to announce our new Summer Hours. In an attempt to beat the heat, the Midland Downtown Farmers’ Market will change our hours to 8am-12pm starting July 9th. I hope this will help lessen the impact of this particularly hot and dry summer on all of us.

The Midland Reporter Telegram is promoting Midland’s favorite 100 businesses. I think the Midland Downtown Farmers’ Market is definitely one of the best. Don’t you? U.S. TRAVEL RALLY DAY SPOTLIGHTS IMPACT OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM IN MIDLAND, TEXAS

American workers ‘stand up for travel’ at nationwide rallies on May 10^th

Midland – The Midland Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) will lead Midland’s travel workers in a Travel Rally at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 at Centennial Plaza, 105 N. Main St. This is one of dozens of rallies nationwide on the same day marking the 28^th annual National Travel and Tourism Week. Travel Rally Day demonstrates in human terms the value of travel to the local community. Employees from major sectors of the travel industry will attend in a show of support for the jobs and economic impact created by visitors.

“We will rally on Tuesday for every person in our community that depends on travelers for their jobs and livelihoods,” said Gaylia Olivas, director of the Midland CVB. “Travel and tourism is one of the most reliable generators of jobs at all levels of the American economy, including right here in Midland. We aim to show the powerful role of travel in this community.”

The rally will honor Midland’s “Faces of Tourism” and celebrate travel’s impact on Midland’s economy.

According to the Office of the Governor, Economic Development and Tourism department, travel and tourism is a $295 million industry for Midland, Texas, providing 3,070 jobs and generating $3.9 million in tax revenue locally. Travel is a broad and diverse industry employing a vast workforce, from airline and attraction employees to restaurant, hotel and taxi workers.

Creating a Unified Vision for CBD

After attending the CBD retreat last week hosted by Midland Development Corporation, I walked out a bit excited about the opportunities of the various groups – and individuals – coming together to create a solid, unified plan for our downtown. The enthusiasm that’s reflected in different groups – MDC, DMMD, the Dunham’s, etc – for the passion and desire to have marketable, multi-use downtown is a great catalyst or launch pad for a long-term plan. My hope is you, as an individual, will embrace the opportunities we have for downtown, and if have an opinion or would like to become involved in the facilitation of the long-term plan, you’ll speak up!

FREE Walking Tour of Downtown Midland

The City of Midland along with local architect, Mark Wellen, will host a Downtown Midland Walking Tour on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 10:00 am. Mark Wellen will be leading the tour of the downtown area, visiting historic mid-century to modern architecture.

The event is free to the public. Anyone wanting to participate should meet in Centennial Plaza at 10:00 am.

The walking tour is in conjunction with the Inaugural Texas MODern Month. Preservation Texas and partners organized the Texas MODern Month concept to raise awareness of the need to preserve locally, regionally, and nationally significant example of modern buildings, sites, and neighborhoods in Texas.

The Young Professionals of Midland and the Midland Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an after-work Party in the Plaza next Thursday, April 28th, starting a 5 p.m. YPM members have been anxiously looking forward to these events all year and we are excited to co-host this social and networking event with the Chamber.

There will be LIVE music by the Blue Cats, food and beverages, warm weather, and good people. I am personally looking forward to stretching my legs and getting out of the office to visit with Chamber and community members. These social events highlight the efforts to revitalize Downtown, and as a young professional working Downtown, I cannot get enough of them.

YPM recently hosted a mixer with the Midland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at Gerardo’s Casita on Thursday April 7th. Here are just a few photos from that event. If you are interested in joining or sponsoring YPM, please visit our website: www.ypmidland.org.

Coming up YPM will also host Martha Dunham for our May Leadership Luncheon, attend Summer Mummers as a group in June, and partner with Midland College and their Upward Bound program in July. Get involved and “Get to Know the Network.”
