The truth is, sometimes we get very frustrated because there is nothing to do in Downtown Midland, or Midland period. Some months are packed with events (see the Live Midland Calendar for February), while some are not (see the Live Midland Calendar for March, although this has a lot to do with Spring Break). However, we have found that once you get a group of friends together, and make a little effort, you can find lots of things to do…. A summary of our weekend downtown:
Thursday Night: Cory attends Girls Night Out at Spring Fling with her sister-in-law at Midland Center Downtown. It was fun! We got to preview all the merchandise, while enjoying all the appetizers and refreshments. We were so glad we went!
Friday: Cory attends Spring Fling again during her lunch break, with her friend who recently moved here from New Jersey (though skeptical about Midland shopping, she ended up buying a super cute dress!) Spring Fling was an amazing fundraiser for the Junior League of Midland this year. Despite the economy, many Midlanders came out and showed their support for the local vendors, as well as those that came in from all over Texas. FYI – Midland ladies, you should know that I learned that not only does Merle Norman here carry makeup, it has a large selection of cute dresses as well! Good to know! Congrats ladies for hosting such a great event this year.
Friday Night: Chris and Cory have date night at Wall Street Bar and Grill. The food was amazing, as usual. Cory ordered the shrimp etouffee (yum!) and Chris had the Mahi-Mahi (although he wants you all to know that he thinks their steaks are really solid). We will feature Wall Street on the blog soon…. We have only featured one restaurant so far in the Downtown Midland “trifecta” of restaurants (Luigi’s/Wall Street/Cancun Grill), so please stay tuned. In any case, Wall Street was fantastic as usual.
Saturday Night: What starts as just dinner with one of our favorite couples in town turns into a true night on the town. First, we went to the Garlic Press for dinner. Not downtown, we know, but Garlic Press is amazing, with its one and only flaw, in our opinion, that it is not located downtown (It’s hard for us to complain at all, as we do so love the Garlic Press and the Hemingway next door!!). Service was great, the food was great, and we had a great time.
We then decided to get a wild hair and try the new Martini Glass Grill Downtown. We won’t lie…. we are going to reserve our opinion of the place until the place is no longer BYOB with a cover charge, because it was SO crowded! We think once it is a true restaurant and martini bar it will be a more comfortable atmosphere. On the plus side, our friend enjoyed a yummy dessert there, and we can honestly say the band was terrific and we really enjoyed the music. Definitely did not feel like we were in Midland anymore! Congrats to the owners for thinking out of the box!
From there, we made stop No. 3 at the Mahogany Lounge. The Mahogany is located on the first floor of the Hilton Hotel Downtown, and we met up with some friends who had just attended a wedding reception upstairs. We had such a good time catching up and hanging out with friends! So for those who think a night on the town is impossible in Downtown Midland, well, we beg to differ!!! It actually is possible, and, as family-friendly as Midland thankfully is, it’s good to know that a little nightlife is still possible once in a while.
