Speaking of Old Midland Houses….

Scarborough-Linebery House hosts ‘perfect Southern funeral’

For those who have never toured the Scarborough-Linebery House, it is something to see.  We actually went together to the 100-year anniversary celebration in 2007, and it was really fun, complete with yard dinner and historical reenactments.  The house is also supposedly Midland’s second oldest home (although our friend Debbie and her family live in an old Cowden home that was moved from Downtown, and it had to have been built in 1907 or before…. But that is another debate for another day).

The Scarborough/Linebery House, located at 802 S. Main, was built in 1907 by Bill and Kara Scarborough, a ranching family who wanted to provide their children with a better education in the Midland.  It was declared a historical home in 1965.  The Scarborough family maintained the house from 1907 to 1996 when it was gifted to the City of Midland by Evelyn and Tom Linebery and the Scarborough/Linebery Foundation.

The house provides education, entertainment, and opportunities for all ages – from the third graders who tour the house to the elderly who remember the days gone-by, to the clubs, organizations, private parties, tourists, and more who enjoy the house.

The historical home is open by appointment for tours, luncheons, dinner parties, day retreats, weddings, receptions and backyard functions.

West Texas War Heroes Honored at New Courthouse Downtown

July 28th, 2009 by Cory and Chris : Posted in General

Once the new Midland County Courts & Administration Building at 505 N. Loraine Steet opens downtown next June or July, the 12 Permian Basin area men who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan will be permanently memorialized in charcoal sketches by Nashville, Tennessee artist Corey Frizzell.  Pictures of the twelve men currently hang on a “Wall of Honor” at the federal courthouse.  Cheers to those responsible for this idea.  There is no true way to even begin to sufficiently thank these soldiers and their families for their service.  But this is a good start.

The Original Petroleum Club

July 27th, 2009 by Cory and Chris : Posted in General

Interesting article in the MRT on the old Wolcott home that used to house the Petroleum Club until 1980, when it was moved to its current location downtown on Wall Street.  Good piece of Midland history.  It is unfortunate that, along with so many historic Midland homes, this old house was razed….

The King and I

July 16th, 2009 by Cory and Chris : Posted in Things To Do

Thai Food in Midland, Texas?  Yes, it is true.  I (Cory) went to eat at this restaurant last week with a friend, and it was excellent.  We debated whether it should be included as a “Downtown” location…..  It is just North of Cuthbert, which I heard at one point is the Northern boundary of downtown.  But since we do have a general lack of lunch places in Downtown Midland, I feel compelled to include it.  Especially since I mentioned Thai food the other day, and a friend responded, “Have you tried the King and I?  It’s Downtown.”  There you go: official downtown lunch spot (It’s across from El Burrito….  close enough).

This is where I get my Thai fix in Midland.  Period.  They have plenty of noodle dishes, vegetarian dishes, and the menu is so varied that even non-Thai lovers will find something they like.

To my fellow Thai food fans: Order the Pad Thai.  It’s excellent, and I recommend it to all (except peanut allergy sufferers, stay away).

The place is full by Noon, because there is definitely a native Midland contingent that knows about this place, and probably don’t want the secret to get out.  The owner mentioned to me he has plans in the works to expand…. I hope he does, because when the place is full, it is FULL, and you will have to wait.  Enjoy.

Cigar Bar to Open Downtown

July 10th, 2009 by Cory and Chris : Posted in Things To Do

Interesting article in the MRT yesterday….  As always, we wish these Downtown entrepreneurs nothing but success.  The back patio sounds especially promising…. Wondering if there will be a “No Smoking” section?  It is a cigar bar after all, so probably not….  We’ll check it out and report back.

Lunch Options in Downtown Midland (or lack thereof)

July 8th, 2009 by Cory and Chris : Posted in Things To Do

Almost every day, this is the dilemma.

Me (Cory): Where should we go for lunch?

Lunch Date: I don’t know, somewhere we can walk to the restaurant.

Me: Luigi’s?

Lunch Date: Ate there two days ago.

Me: Cancun Grill?

Lunch Date: Sounds great, but it’s so crowded.

Me: Wall Street?

Lunch Date: Eating there with the hubby Friday night.

Sometimes the lunch date is my husband.  Sometimes a co-worker.  Usually my friend Mary Ann.  All of us work downtown.  What to do?

The solution: Cancun on the Go.  We’ve mentioned it before, but simply posting that it is open is totally inadequate.  It is AWESOME.  Cancun food, at lunch prices, without the crowds, and the salads, wraps, and sandwiches perfect to grab and go (especially if you’re looking for light options).  I usually pick it up to go myself, but they do have some small tables right outside.  Today, I ordered my food, sat down, went over some work notes in peace, made some calls.  It was relaxing, quiet, and convenient.  And let me tell you about the Downtown Salad.  What’s in a Downtown Salad?  I’m glad you asked:

Downtown Salad at Cancun on the Go:

Mixed greens with diced Turkey, Tomatoes, Sweet Onions, dried Cranberries & Pecans with Raspberry Vinaigrette.

Finally, not only do they offer the famous “corn queso” to go, they offer their should-be-famous original recipe Tres Leches dessert.  In a cup.  To go.  A large cup.  I wish this is something I had never discovered.

Fellow downtowners: Please give this place a try.  You’ll be glad you did.  I sure do hope it is as successful as its predecessor, Cancun Grill…. Otherwise, it’s back to the Subway on Big Spring Street.
